Dr. Arevalo is the son of a very prestigious pediatric ophthalmologist in Caracas, Venezuela (Dr. Fernando Arevalo-Coutinho [1928-89]).
Dr Arevalo completed his medical and ophthalmology training in Caracas, Venezuela, his native country, before traveling to Bogotá, Colombia for a two-year Retina and Vitreous fellowship at the Barraquer Institute and the Fundacion Oftalmologica Nacional (University of El Rosario) in 1992-93. After this intensive training in these two world famous institutions, he traveled to the United States for a 2-year Retina and Vitreous/Uveitis and Intraocular Inflammation fellowship at University of California, San Diego from 1993-95 under the mentoring of Dr. William Freeman. The following year, Dr. Arevalo went to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for his Ocular Oncology fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital under the mentoring of Drs. Jerry and Carol Shields.
Upon completing his fellowship training in Colombia and the United States, Dr Arevalo returned to Venezuela (1996), where he has quickly appointed to the rank of Chairman of Ophthalmology at the Clinica Oftalmologica Centro Caracas in Caracas, Venezuela, and Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Los Andes, Merida, Venezuela. Under his leadership, the Clinica Oftalmologica Centro Caracas grew in stature, training ophthalmologists from Venezuela and neighboring countries and providing modern eye care for countless patients. Dr Arevalo has become recognized as one of the leading ophthalmologists in South America and in 2000 founded the Arevalo-Coutinho Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology to honor his father.
Dr Arevalo has made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of vitreoretinal disease. A gifted surgeon, he has performed more than 4000 retinal detachment operations. He also teaches and conducts clinical research that have led to advances in the treatment of complex retinal detachments, vitreo-retinal complications of refractive surgery, and age-related macular degeneration (combination therapy and anti-angiogenics).
As a clinical scientist, Dr Arevalo has more than 450 scientific publications, four books, more than 300 scientific paper presentations authored or co-authored, and more than 500 invited lecture presentations in North-America, South-America, Central-America, Europe, Africa, and Asia that have led to international recognition and awards such as the 1999 American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award, the 2001 Vitreous Society Honor Award, the 2002 American Society of Retina Specialists Senior Honor Award, Special Acknowledgment at the XXVIII Brazilian Congress of Retina and Vitreous 2003, Honorary Member of the Colombian Society of Ophthalmology 2004, Special Acknowledgment at the XX Peruvian Congress of Ophthalmology 2004, the Rhett Buckler Award of the American Society of Retina Specialists 2005, the Best of the Retina-Vitreous posters at American Academy of Ophthalmology’s 2005 Annual Meeting, the Best Retina Poster at The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Annual Meeting 2006 and 2007, the 2007 American Academy of Ophthalmology International Ophthalmologist Education
Award, and the 2007 Senior American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award.
Dr. Arevalo belongs to numerous scientific societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Retina Society, the Macula Society, the Club Jules Gonin, and is Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Arevalo is currently serving as the President of the Pan-American Retina and Vitreous Society (2006-2008), and is a member of the Board of Directors/Executive Committee of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Arevalo is married to Dr. Oly Azar-Arevalo (an ophthalmologist and cornea specialist) and has a son, Fernando Andres, who is 12 years old.
